Building a more diverse and inclusive place for people who use Pinterest, including content producers just like you.
Creating a platform for everyone
Industry-leading products to represent our diverse communities.
Inclusive AI
Body type technology: Technology that uses shape, size and form to identify various body types in over five billion images on our platform. Adding to a suite of inclusive AI, Pinterest uses this technology to shape how our algorithms increase representation in search results and in your related feeds for women’s fashion and wedding-related content. In other words, when you search for, say, ‘date night outfits’, you’ll gradually start seeing more people of various body shapes and sizes in fashion-related results.
Skin tone technology: Skin tone technology is also used to increase representation of skin tones across search results and related Pins. So whether searching for everyday looks or special occasion inspo, people on Pinterest can find more diverse ideas from the get-go.
Search refinement tools
Skin tone ranges: Through computer vision-powered object detection, skin tone ranges is a feature that allows people to refine their beauty-related searches. Selecting a range updates your search results to show content that is similar to the skin tone range that you selected.
Hair pattern search: You can also refine hair searches by six different hair patterns: protective, coily, curly, wavy, straight and shaved/bald. People can search for hair-related terms such as ‘summer hairstyles’, ‘glam hair’ or ‘short hair’, and narrow their results by selecting a hair pattern to find hair inspiration that is most relevant to their style and preference.
AR Try On
People on Pinterest can try on and shop for beauty products using augmented reality technology, right from the app. Simply click the Pinterest Lens camera in search, and you can browse, try on and buy eyeshadow and lipstick shades from the convenience of your home. You can filter product results by colour, price range or brand, save them to a board for later, view a ‘more like this’ board section and see additional Pins with similar shades, and filter recommendations for your skin tone range.
Inclusive guidelines for creators
The key to an inclusive approach comes from a place of openness and respect.
Ensure that your efforts are authentic and consistent by acknowledging the limitations of your own perspective and promoting those who have different experiences. Inclusion isn’t about pretending to be something that you’re not, but about celebrating the diversity of our communities, which includes clearly crediting those who have educated and inspired you.
Actively seek out ways to learn about audience interests and lifestyles beyond your own. Audit your own social media feeds for missing perspectives so that you can actively seek out and follow creators from those backgrounds. Read, listen and use insights to gain new perspectives and fresh angles, and to uncover any biases. Learn more
